Artikel 63: Financial provisions for members of parliament

Artikel 63

Financial remuneration for members and former members of the States General and their dependants shall be regulated by Act of Parliament. The Houses may pass a Bill on the matter only if at least two-thirds of the votes cast are in favour.

Explanation

Please note: Only the Dutch-language version of the Constitution has legal effect.

What Members of Parliament earn is stipulated in a law. There is also a law regarding how their pensions are arranged and what potential survivors receive. The Houses can only adopt or amend such a law with at least two-thirds of the votes cast.

Three laws apply in this context:

  • the Compensation Act for Members of the House of Representatives
  • the Allowances for Members of the Senate Act
  • the General Pension and Benefits Act for Political Office Holders.
